Every year, CUTA’s conference and transit show brings the industry together. And in a year unlike any other for transit, we’re holding a conference November 16-19 like never before by going virtual. It will deliver the same quality programming as always, allow for networking as usual, but do it online with more international content. We’re excited about it and hope you are, too. Because there’s a new normal for transit and we’re going to move forward with confidence.

Keynote speakers

The Honourable Catherine McKenna, Member of Parliament for Ottawa Centre and Minister of Infrastructure and Communities

In 2015, Catherine McKenna was elected the first female Member of Parliament for Ottawa Centre and appointed Minister of Environment and Climate Change.

In both roles, Catherine earned a reputation as a skilled negotiator and tenacious community builder. A champion for Ottawa Centre, Catherine is most proud of the results she has achieved to date for residents in her riding, including securing federal funding for the new Flora Crossing, Ottawa LRT Phase 2, the new ‘super library’, more summer jobs for students, more affordable housing, and investments to help grow the local economy and create good jobs.

As of October 2019, Catherine was re-elected as the Member of Parliament for Ottawa Centre and appointed as Minister of Infrastructure and Communities. As Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, she is working towards building a more resilient, cleaner, more prosperous country and creating a better future for our kids and grandkids.

A mom of three, Catherine is a long-time resident of the Glebe.

As M.P. for Ottawa Centre and in her Ministerial role, Catherine also led federal actions to protect the Ottawa River, make local buildings more energy-efficient, put a national a price on pollution and ban single-use plastics, by 2021. Catherine previously worked as a lawyer in Canada and Indonesia, was a negotiator with the UN mission in East Timor, taught at the Munk School of Global Affairs and co-founded Level Justice, a charitable organization. Earned degrees from the University of Toronto, the London School of Economics and McGill Law



Andy Byford, Commissioner, Transport for London

Presentation: managing health and safety on Transport for London during Covid-19

Andy Byford is a transport professional whose 30-year career has spanned three continents.

Andy joined London Underground in 1989 as a uniformed Station Foreman before working his way up to General Manager of the Bakerloo, Central and Victoria Lines.

After a spell as Operations and Safety Director of two mainline train operating companies, Andy’s career took him to Sydney as Chief Operating Officer of Australia’s largest railway network then on to Canada where he headed up the Toronto Transit Commission. Most recently, Andy served as President of New York City Transit, the busiest and largest transit system in North America.

Andy returned to Transport for London in June 2020 as Commissioner. He grew up in Plymouth and is a graduate of the University of Leicester.




Rick Leary, CEO, Toronto Transit Commission

Presentation: The TTC's action plan on attracting and developing a diverse and qualified workforce

Prior to becoming the CEO of the TTC in July 2018, Rick Leary was Chief Service Officer/Deputy CEO for four years. Leary is an award winning Transit Executive with a long and tenured history in public transit.

Prior to his arrival at the TTC in 2014, he was General Manager for York Region Transit/VIVA. Leary began his career working for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority out of Boston as a train attendant in 1984 rising through the ranks and eventually serving as Chief Operating Officer until he retired in 2009.

Leary has degrees from Northeastern University including a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration as well as a Certificate of Special Studies from Harvard University in Administration and Management.




Young Tae Kim, Secretary-General, International Transport Forum at the OECD

Presentation: re-spacing our cities for resilience

Young Tae Kim is the Secretary-General of the International Transport Forum (ITF). He was elected by the transport ministers of ITF member countries at their annual summit on 1 June 2017 and took office in August 2017.

Prior to his election as ITF Secretary-General, Dr. Kim distinguished himself in the civil service of his native Korea, most recently serving as Director-General in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT). As Deputy Director-General from 2015, he was responsible for coordinating various transport policies including on autonomous vehicle, greenhouse gas reduction, urban transportation, Intelligent Transport Systems and road safety, among others.

After joining the MOLIT in 1994 as Deputy Director for Urban Transport, Dr. Kim also held several Deputy Director and Director positions with responsibility for housing welfare, integrated city development and overseas infrastructure construction. He was seconded to the Prime Minister's Commission on Administrative Reform in 1996 and the Presidential Committee on Social Inclusion in 2005-2007. From 2010 to 2014, Dr. Kim worked in Washington, D.C., as Counsellor for Construction, Transport and Maritime Affairs at the Korean Embassy.

Jennifer McNeill, CUTA Chair, Business Members Committee and Vice-President of Sales & Marketing at New Flyer

Jennifer McNeill is a transportation industry veteran with over two decades of leadership in transit bus manufacturing and aerospace maintenance. She joined New Flyer in 2012 and leads the Sales and Marketing operation, while also providing strategic business intelligence direction.

Prior to joining New Flyer, Jennifer worked for StandardAero for 17 years where she held senior management and leadership positions in engineering, quality, sales, and business strategy, including Vice President Sales, Marketing and Business Development. Jennifer is a catalyst for the development of New Flyer’s zero-emission bus and infrastructure offerings in Canada and the U.S., and an advocate for smart, sustainable, and resilient mobility.




Nuria Fernandez, Chair of the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) 

Presentation: re-positioning transit in a post-Covid world

With more than 35 years of experience, Nuria Fernandez has made a name for herself as an inspiring leader in the transportation industry. As the General Manager and CEO of the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), she is responsible for 2100 employees, delivering projects, programs, and transit services that provide mobility solutions for more than 2 million people who live and work in Silicon Valley.

Among the highlights of her tenure at VTA is the construction of the $7 Billion extension of the heavy rail service, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) into Silicon Valley. When completed, the two-part project, including 16 miles of rail and 6 news stations, will provide transit alternatives for tens of thousands of commuters to Silicon Valley. The first two stations, Phase I of the project, are slated to begin passenger service in 2020.

Fernandez was appointed Acting Federal Transit Administrator by President Bill Clinton, where she enabled the administration of more than a billion dollars in annual grant funding to local communities for planning, design, and construction of new and expanding rail and bus systems.

Fernandez serves as Chair of the American Public Transportation Association for 2019-2020.


Michael Lindsay, President and CEO of Infrastructure Ontario (IO)

Michael Lindsay is President and CEO of Infrastructure Ontario (IO). He was appointed CEO in November 2020. In this role, he works closely with his Executive team and with partners in both the public and private sectors to build, manage, finance and enhance the value of the Province's assets.

Michael Lindsay rejoined Infrastructure Ontario as President, Project Delivery, in 2019, bringing his extensive experience supporting a range of innovative public and private partnerships.

Prior to returning to Infrastructure Ontario in 2019, Michael served as Special Advisor to the Government of Ontario on the upload of the Toronto subway system.

Michael also previously served as Head of Strategic Partnerships & Government for the Investment Management Corporation of Ontario (“IMCO”).

As the Global Director of Infrastructure Planning & Advisory at Hatch, Michael helped governments create public private partnerships (“P3s”), and helped private investors effectively negotiate the terms and scope of those partnerships.

From 2014 to 2016, Michael was Senior Vice President of Commercial Projects at Infrastructure Ontario. In that role, he was responsible for commercial transactions related to the financing, development, and divestiture of public assets in Ontario (e.g. land, buildings, services). His team structured P3s related to energy, transit and social infrastructure, and contracted private entities to deliver services through a range of outsourced models.
