FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OTTAWA, March 18 — The Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA) is celebrating Transit Operator and Worker Appreciation Day as part of a week of recognition from March 16 to March 20. Each year, transit systems, businesses, riders and elected officials recognize and thank Canada’s dedicated public transit workers who help keep communities moving.

CUTA proudly celebrates the dedication of frontline transit operators, along with the essential contributions of maintenance crews, mechanics, dispatchers and other transit professionals who keep systems operating safely and efficiently. Their commitment helps ensure that public transportation remains accessible and reliable for communities across the country.

The safety of transit workers continues to be a top priority for the industry. Earlier this year, CUTA welcomed the passage of Bill C-14 at third reading in the House of Commons. The legislation expands Criminal Code protections so that assaults against all transit workers — not only vehicle operators — are treated as an aggravating factor at sentencing.

This important change reflects years of national advocacy by CUTA and its industry partners, as well as recommendations from CUTA’s Transit Safety Task Force. As the bill moves to the Senate, CUTA will continue working with parliamentarians to support its swift passage.

CUTA encourages Canadians to share their appreciation for these everyday transit heroes on social media using the hashtag #ThanksTransit. Riders are invited to share their experiences and recognize the people who help keep communities connected.

“Transit staff work hard every day to make our lives easier,” said Marco D’Angelo, CUTA President and CEO. “Let’s show them how much we value their dedication and recognize the vital role they play in building vibrant, thriving communities.”

CUTA’s members include transit systems across Canada and the businesses that support them. In total, CUTA represents more than 64,000 transit operators and workers.
