CUTA Urges Council of the Federation to Prioritize Public Transit Infrastructure

Published July 22, 2025.

OTTAWA – As Canada’s premiers meet this week at the Council of the Federation in Huntsville, the Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA) is urging them to make public transit infrastructure a national priority.

“Public transit connects millions of Canadians to jobs, education, healthcare, and opportunity,” said Marco D’Angelo, President and CEO of CUTA. “As essential infrastructure, it must be prioritized in national discussions about Canada’s future, whether the focus is economic growth, climate action, or quality of life.”

From Toronto’s subway to Montreal’s Metro, from Calgary’s LRT to Vancouver’s SkyTrain, municipal transit systems form the backbone of Canada’s low-carbon transportation network. Unfortunately, these systems face growing pressures, including aging infrastructure, population growth, and the need for stable, long-term funding.

CUTA is calling on Canada’s premiers to recognize the essential role public transit plays in the country’s largest urban regions. Cities need stable, predictable investment, and that starts with a voice in how national decisions are made.

The upcoming Canada Public Transit Fund presents a vital opportunity to meet these infrastructure challenges. By working together across all levels of government, we can ensure public transit keeps pace with growing demand while advancing national goals on climate, equity, and economic competitiveness.
