CUTA Welcomes Federal Action to Streamline the Canada Public Transit Fund

QUEBEC CITY, QC, June 2, 2026 — As transit leaders from across the country gather in Quebec City for CUTA’s Spring Summit, CUTA welcomes today’s announcement by the Government of Canada to establish the new Strong Transit Fund which will unlock long-planned major transit expansion, maintenance and fleet renewal.

“This is a significant and positive step for Canada’s transit sector,” said Marco D’Angelo, CUTA’s President & CEO. “Transit operators have been calling for an expedited path to deliver Ottawa’s share of shovel-ready projects ready to move Canadians. We are encouraged to see the government’s pledge today to move projects forward.”

Today’s announcement reflects many of the priorities raised by transit systems, municipalities, and industry partners across the country. CUTA has consistently advocated for long-term funding certainty, faster approvals, and a practical implementation framework that enables transit agencies and communities to deliver projects more quickly.

CUTA welcomes federal-provincial progress, including today’s historic Canada-Quebec Agreement, which demonstrates the government’s commitment to moving from program design to project delivery.

“Transit agencies are ready to build,” added D’Angelo. “What matters now is ensuring that funding flows quickly as cities across Canada are finalizing their 2027 capital plans. Canada’s bus and rail manufacturers, in addition to the hundreds of businesses that support our domestic supply chains, will also benefit from this certainty, helping the Strong Transit Fund deliver good-paying jobs and affordable commutes in every part of the country”.
