Steve Munro received the Excellence Award at the 2024 CUTA Awards Ceremony.

Steve Munro, a Toronto-based transit advocate and blogger, has been a dedicated voice for improving public transit for over 35 years. Known for his deep knowledge, Steve has been a consistent presence at Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) meetings, offering objective and critical insights from the transit user’s perspective. Through his blog, stevemunro.ca, and regular columns for Spacing and Torontoist, he shares analyses on transit issues, making him a trusted resource for media, politicians, and the public.

Steve’s passion for transit began with childhood trips on Toronto’s streetcars. In 1972, he helped found the “Streetcars for Toronto” Committee to save the city’s streetcar system from elimination. This success helped revive interest in electric rail transit across Canada and the U.S., inspiring cities like Edmonton and Calgary to adopt similar systems.

Steve’s leadership in the Streetcars for Toronto Committee was a pivotal moment for public transit in Toronto. His efforts convinced the TTC to retain its streetcar network, which has since become a symbol of the city. His work contributed to a broader revival of electric rail transit in North America.

Recognized for his advocacy, Steve was awarded the Jane Jacobs Medal in 2005.

Through his blog and media appearances, Steve continues to provide insightful analysis and critique, advocating for better transit services and holding transit planners accountable.

Steve’s efforts to preserve and expand Toronto’s streetcar system not only benefited the city but also influenced other regions. His detailed analyses of Toronto’s transit operations, such as his 2015 study on TTC’s Harbourfront route, have led to tangible improvements, including better traffic light coordination that reduced delays.

For over 50 years, Steve Munro has been a relentless advocate for public transit, championing the interests of transit users and driving positive change in Toronto’s transit system.
