Transit Highlights: Big Investments for Rural Riders and Festive Service Enhancements in B.C. (Week of November 17-21)
As the winter season ramps up, transit systems across Canada are rolling out new improvements and service boosts to better connect their communities. In Simcoe County, rural riders are set to benefit from a significant investment aimed at strengthening public transit in remote areas. A joint $4.8-million commitment from the federal government and the county, delivered through the Rural Transit Solutions Fund, will bring four new LINX buses and solar-powered lighting to the region. The upgrades are designed to improve comfort, safety, and overall accessibility, making it easier for residents to reach jobs, education, and essential services. Of the total funding, the federal government will provide $2.9 million, while the county will contribute $2 million.
Meanwhile, on the West Coast, BC Transit is spreading some holiday cheer in Prince Rupert with expanded service throughout December. From December 15 to 24, riders can expect Friday-level service on all conventional routes every day except Sunday, offering longer hours and more frequent trips during the busiest time of year. The goal is to make holiday shopping and festive events more convenient for families across the community. Beyond schedule enhancements, BC Transit is celebrating the season with events across the province, from parades and light tours to “stuff-a-bus” activities that bring people together while supporting local causes.
Together, these initiatives highlight how transit systems continue to evolve, whether by improving rural mobility or creating more accessible and festive service during the holidays.
