Transit Highlights: Cities Roll Out New Transit Pilots Focused on Sustainability and Rider Experience (Week of April 14-18)
Transit systems across Canada continue to innovate, with new projects launching in Barrie and Calgary aimed at creating more sustainable, efficient, and rider-friendly services.
The City of Barrie Launches Electric Bus Pilot
The City of Barrie has officially introduced its first fully electric, made-in-Canada bus, marking a significant step toward its goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. The city purchased two electric buses with support from the federal Zero Emission Transit Fund, which contributed $1.65 million toward the initiative.
The pilot project will test the vehicles’ performance on Barrie’s roads and in its varied climate, while collecting data to help build a long-term business case for fleet electrification. In addition to reducing emissions, the electric buses are expected to offer a quieter, smoother ride for passengers.
Calgary Transit Pilots New LED Screens, Enhancing Rider Experience
Meanwhile, Calgary Transit is focusing on improving the rider experience with the launch of a new pilot project testing LED screens on board select buses. The screens will display real-time route information and service updates, making it easier for passengers to plan their trips and stay informed during their commute.
The project reflects Calgary Transit’s ongoing efforts to modernize service and enhance customer communications as it continues to evolve alongside the needs of its riders.
Stay tuned as these projects roll out and Canadian transit systems continue to lead with innovation and sustainability.
