Transit Highlights: Electric Expansion, Bike Week Perks, and CTrain Storefronts Reimagined (Week of May 19-23)
Across Canada, transit systems are evolving with cleaner fleets, more bike-friendly options, and creative ways to make stations feel safer and more connected to the communities they serve. Here are three exciting updates from Halifax, British Columbia, and Calgary that highlight innovation on the move.
Halifax Rolls Out 60 New Electric Buses
A major milestone for green transit on the East Coast, Halifax has officially launched 60 new electric buses into service. It’s the first city in Atlantic Canada to go electric at scale. The battery-powered fleet is expected to cut an estimated 2,800 tonnes of carbon emissions every year.
The $112-million initiative includes upgrades to the Ragged Lake Transit Centre, with new charging stations and rooftop solar panels to support the zero-emission buses. Looking ahead, Halifax is also gearing up for a hydrogen pilot project that will convert four diesel buses to dual-fuel systems by 2026.
Ride Free with BC Transit During Go By Bike Week
Cyclists in British Columbia can take advantage of free transit from May 31 to June 6 during Go By Bike Week. All you need to do is bring your bike, load it onto the front rack, and show your helmet to the driver to ride at no cost.
It’s a great way to support multimodal commuting while encouraging greener travel across the province. Just remember that bike space is available on most buses but not guaranteed.
Calgary Transit Is Bringing Back Storefronts to CTrain Stations
Those long-shuttered kiosks in Calgary CTrain stations are about to get a second life. Calgary Transit is planning to reopen commercial spaces at Bridgeland, Brentwood, Heritage, and Southland stations. The first vendor is expected to open by the end of this year. A café at Westbrook station is also in the works.
Transit officials say the move aims to boost convenience for riders and activate public spaces, bringing more eyes, energy, and amenities to the LRT network.
Stay tuned as we continue to spotlight transit transformations across Canada!
