Montreal Pilots Smartphone Fare Payments

Montreal is taking a big step toward modernizing its fare system. The Autorité régionale de transport métropolitain (ARTM) is piloting a new feature in the Chrono app that allows riders to purchase and validate fares using their smartphones. The phased rollout begins this summer, with full implementation expected by late fall. While this system currently works separately from the Opus card, it’s part of a broader plan to introduce direct contactless payments such as tapping a bank card by 2026.

Calgary Approves $15M for Secure Bus Barriers After Driver Assault

In response to a recent violent attack on a Calgary Transit driver, the city council has unanimously approved a $15-million investment to install more secure assault barriers across the bus fleet. This replaces an earlier plan for plastic shields with stronger enclosures, alongside new signage and safety reviews. The funding comes from Calgary’s fiscal stability reserve and forms part of a broader update to the city’s RouteAhead transit strategy.

Free Transit for Elks Fans in Edmonton

Game day transit is back for Edmonton Elks fans. As part of a partnership between the team and Edmonton Transit Service, Elks tickets can once again be used as a free transit pass. The offer is valid for two hours before and after home games and includes access to park-and-ride, buses and LRT. Direct service to Commonwealth Stadium resumes Friday, just in time for the pre-season opener.

Whether it’s through innovation, safety or community connection, transit systems are finding new ways to serve riders better. As these initiatives roll out, they not only enhance daily commutes—they also help build stronger, more accessible transit networks across the country.
