From affordability and accessibility to innovation and community connection, here’s a look at what’s shaping transit this week in Canada:

TransLink Introduces New SkyTrain Model with a Theatrical Twist

TransLink gave riders a show-stopping introduction to its newest SkyTrain cars by staging a Wicked-inspired musical parody.

Featuring TransLink staff and performers in costume, the campaign video reimagines the hit song Popular to highlight features of the new Mark V trains, including open gangways, more bike storage, and better accessibility. It’s a fun, creative way to engage the public while showcasing fleet upgrades.

Barrie Tests Electric Buses in Year-Long Pilot Project

The City of Barrie is piloting two electric buses for a full year as part of its ongoing commitment to reduce emissions and modernize transit services.

Data gathered from the test will help determine whether a broader rollout is viable. Residents are encouraged to share feedback on the rider experience as the city evaluates performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.

TransLink Adds Language Pins to Promote Multilingual Connections

TransLink is making it easier for riders to connect with operators by introducing pins that show the languages employees speak.

Each pin displays one of 14 languages, enabling better communication and more inclusive service. The program is being gradually introduced across the network, with the goal of celebrating diversity and enhancing customer experience.

Universal Transit Pass Now Available for UNB Undergrads

Fredericton Transit and the University of New Brunswick are rolling out a universal bus pass (U-Pass) for all undergraduate students starting this fall.

The move follows strong student support and builds on existing programs in other Canadian cities. The pass gives students unlimited access to transit services during the academic year, reducing transportation costs and encouraging sustainable travel.

Whether it’s empowering students, testing greener tech, or building stronger rider relationships, transit continues to connect communities in creative, practical ways. Stay tuned for next week’s highlights.
