Tyrone Gan wins William G. Ross Lifetime Achievement Award

Tyrone Gan received the William G. Ross Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 CUTA Awards Ceremony.

Tyrone Gan, Senior Vice President at HDR, is a highly respected transit professional with over 40 years of

experience in public transit planning across Canada. He advises major clients like Metrolinx, the Ministry of Transportation Ontario, and the TTC on significant projects, leveraging his expertise in heavy rail, urban rail, and bus rapid transit.

With a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Civil Engineering from the University of Toronto, Tyrone is a registered Professional Engineer in multiple

provinces and actively participates in industry organizations like ACEC and CUTA. He began his career with the City of Calgary, where he managed the West Light Rail Transit project, the city’s first design-build initiative, completed on time and within budget.

In 1996, Tyrone founded iTrans Consulting, which grew from one employee to 120 before being acquired by HDR in 2009. His notable contributions to rapid transit planning in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) include:

  • Ontario Line: A current project aimed at alleviating downtown
  • Richmond Hill Transportation Master Plan: An award-winning initiative prioritizing the Yonge subway extension to Highway
  • Highway 7 BRT: Key in developing the business case and implementation of the Viva BRT in York Region.
  • Mississauga Rapid Transit Network Study: Identified higher-order transit corridors now in advanced

Tyrone emphasizes inclusive and environmentally conscious transit solutions and has mentored many young professionals in the field. His visionary leadership has significantly transformed the GTHA’s transit system, contributing to the Greater Golden Horseshoe Transportation Plan and the ZUM Bus Network in Brampton, which serves about 40 million passengers annually.

The Ontario Line, now under construction, exemplifies Tyrone’s dedication to enhancing transit service and connectivity, with anticipated improvements for Toronto’s transit system by 2030. His influence extends through mentorship and support for initiatives advancing transportation research, ensuring a lasting impact on the industry.
