This week, transit systems in British Columbia and Ontario are rolling out innovative programs to support sustainability and community connection.

Greater Victoria Marks Clean Air Day with Free Transit and New Electric Buses

Transit was free in Greater Victoria on Wednesday, June 4, in celebration of Clean Air Day. Supported by BC Transit and the Victoria Regional Transit System, the initiative encouraged residents to choose greener transportation. It aligned with the Province of BC’s CleanBC Plan and came as BC Transit began rolling out electric buses, with the first arriving in April.

By removing fares for the day and highlighting the environmental benefits of public transit, the initiative helped raise awareness about air quality, climate change, and the role of sustainable mobility in achieving a cleaner future.

Milton Transit Launches Summer Read and Ride Program with Free Youth Passes and Kickoff Event

Milton Transit is bringing back its popular Read and Ride program, offering free rides to youth aged 16 and under from June 14 to August 30. Young riders simply need to show a validated Milton Public Library card when boarding the bus. Free validation stickers will be available at all library branches starting June 14.

To celebrate the launch, a kickoff event will be held that day at the Main Library from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Families can enjoy fun activities, pick up their validation stickers, and take part in a scavenger hunt aboard a Milton Transit bus parked outside the library.

Whether it’s promoting clean air or supporting youth access to transit and literacy, these programs highlight how transit systems continue to make a positive impact in their communities. As summer begins, we’re excited to see more initiatives that bring people together, reduce emissions, and support local engagement across Canada.
