What the Federal Election Results Mean for Public Transit

Published April 29, 2025.

Yesterday, Canadians elected Mark Carney and the Liberal Party to a fourth consecutive mandate, forming a minority government. On behalf of the Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA) and our members, we congratulate Prime Minister Carney, his cabinet, and all elected Members of Parliament.

The outcome left the Bloc Québécois and NDP holding the balance of power. Both parties strongly emphasized investing in transit in their election platforms.

This election was a critical moment for our sector — and CUTA worked throughout the campaign to ensure the voice of public transit was heard.

Through our advocacy efforts and engagement with all major parties, we emphasized the urgent need for sustained infrastructure investment to keep Canada moving. Transit’s role in affordability, climate action, and economic competitiveness was a central part of the conversation.

But our work does not stop with the election – it begins in earnest now.

CUTA will be working closely with the new government and all parties to:

  • Ensure the Canada Public Transit Fund (CPTF) remains a top priority.
  • Position public transit as a critical tool for achieving housing, climate, and economic goals.
  • Ensure safety and security for transit riders and workers.

This is the power of our collective voice in action.

As your national advocate, CUTA will continue to advocate for federal policy decisions that positively impact our communities and the future of public transit in Canada.

We thank our members for their ongoing leadership and support. Together, we are delivering more than transit — we are delivering better lives and stronger communities for Canadians.
