York Region Wins Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Award
York Region receives EDI award for “Together we are sheltering from the elements” at CUTA’s 2025 Awards Ceremony in Montreal.
YRT partnered with the Chippewas of Georgina Island to install and name a new bus shelter at the Georgina Island ferry docks, marking the first culturally named transit shelter in York Region. Named Maamwi ndibi nooshimin “Together we are sheltering from the elements” the shelter reflects the community’s heritage and language. A collaborative team developed signage featuring transit information, cultural context, original Indigenous artwork, and a QR code linking to language resources. The project enhances transit service, fosters community connection, and celebrates Indigenous identity. Approximately 265 YRT On-Request trips take place monthly at the site, improving access while honouring local culture.
