Charlene Sharpe Wins Edward J. Dowling Distinguished Service Award
Charlene Sharpe received the Edward J. Dowling Distinguished Service Award at CUTA’s 2025 Awards Ceremony in Montreal.
Charlene is a seasoned transit professional with a career spanning more than 20 years, focused on transformation and improving the customer experience. She has held key roles across multiple transit organizations, including Halifax Transit, where she led the implementation of SAP HR, and various Ontario projects, such as the GTA Fare and Service Integration Strategy, the PRESTO Steering Committee, and the Metrolinx Transit Procurement Initiative.
Since joining Fredericton Transit in 2022, Charlene has gained the trust of the community, City Council, and senior management by implementing major technology upgrades, including CAD/AVL systems, electronic payment, passenger counters, and onboard announcements, significantly enhancing operational efficiency and rider experience. She developed a three-year strategy and Service Standards adopted by Council, paving the way for Sunday service, increased weekday service, and on-demand services in underutilized areas. She also guided provincial rural transit initiatives, fostering collaboration across urban and rural systems.
An active advocate at the municipal, provincial, and national levels, Charlene serves on CUTA’s Board, has contributed to small transit system committees, and is part of the CUTA Bus Manufacturing Task Force. Her leadership has driven measurable results: a 25% increase in service hours and 20% year-over-year ridership growth in Fredericton, while strengthening Canada’s transit industry overall. Charlene was recognized with a CAO coin for her transformative impact on Fredericton Transit.
