Shaping the Future of Transit: Highlights from CUTA’s 2024 Fall Conference in Toronto
The 2024 CUTA Fall Conference and Trade Show in Toronto brought together over 650 transit professionals, industry leaders, and policymakers to celebrate the association’s 120th anniversary and explore the future of public transit in Canada. Hosted by the Toronto Transit Commission, the event featured inspiring contributions from TTC CEO Greg Percy, TTC Chair Jamaal Myers, and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, who each highlighted their visions for advancing transit systems and creating more sustainable, inclusive communities.
Attendees were welcomed with filmed remarks from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to supporting public transit as a pillar of Canada’s economic, environmental, and social progress. Paul Skouletas, President and CEO of the American Public Transportation Association, offered valuable perspectives from the U.S. transit sector, while Metrolinx CEO Phil Verster provided provincial insights on key challenges and opportunities. Our Trade Show, which many consider to be the centerpiece of the event, showcased the innovative spirit that drives our industry with exhibitor booths displaying advancements in zero-emissions technology, digital integration, and on-demand solutions, amongst countless other services offered that support our systems and communities. Complementing these discussions were technical tours hosted by the TTC, offering attendees a behind-the-scenes look at Toronto’s world-class transit network and its commitment to innovation and sustainability.
The conference also provided a platform for thought-provoking presentations by experts addressing diverse and pressing topics, from safety and security to advocacy for sustainable funding models and the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in transit operations. Networking flourished at signature events like the Welcome Reception at the Arcadian Court and the Business Members Evening at the iconic Hockey Hall of Fame, fostering valuable connections and collaborations among attendees. Industry excellence was celebrated at the awards ceremony, recognizing achievements across equity, innovation, and customer experience, further underscoring the impact of public transit on communities across Canada. As the event concluded, CUTA extended its gratitude to all attendees, sponsors, and the dedicated support staff from the TTC, the Westin Harbour Castle, the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, and the CUTA team, whose tireless efforts ensured the event’s success. We hope that this year’s conference left participants inspired and energized, setting the stage for bold advancements in Canadian public transit in the years to come.
