STM and Transit Win Innovation Award

The STM and Transit received the Innovation Award at the 2024 CUTA Awards Ceremony.

The STM and Transit developed an algorithm to automatically detect bus detours in Montreal, addressing frequent disruptions caused by road work, accidents, and weather. Over one in six bus lines faces detours daily, making timely communication essential. Previously, while bus drivers knew about detours, this information was not relayed to customers.

The project aimed to create a simple, cost-effective solution using AI to manage detour information. STM sought to implement a proof of concept that would systematically detect active detours and publish data in an open format (GTFS-TripModifications), benefiting the transit industry.

Using existing vehicle position data, the project identified when buses deviated from regular routes. If a bus made the same detour three times, the system published the information automatically. This integration allowed quick updates on detour stops for customers via the Transit app and STM website.

During an April 2023 ice storm that paralyzed Montreal, the STM effectively communicated bus detours thanks to the automatic detection feature.

The project significantly enhanced the customer experience, allowing quick access to detour information. A survey conducted two months post-launch found that 92% of respondents found detour updates useful, and 74% felt more confident in STM services.

The STM is the first transit agency globally to use this innovative data format for communicating detours, benefiting both its customers and the broader industry. The success of this project has enabled Transit to extend this solution to other cities.
