Transit Highlights: Digital Innovation, Major Infrastructure Investments, and Fleet Electrification (Week of June 15-19)
Transit agencies and industry partners across Canada continue to advance projects that improve customer experience, strengthen system reliability, and support the transition to sustainable transportation. Here are three recent developments making headlines across the sector.
TTC Launches Real-Time Subway & LRT Service Updates
Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) riders can now access real-time service information for subway and light rail transit (LRT) lines through the Transit app. The new feature provides live updates on delays, service disruptions, and system status, helping customers make more informed travel decisions before and during their journeys.
The initiative is part of the TTC’s ongoing efforts to improve customer communications and increase service transparency. By providing riders with timely and accurate information, the TTC aims to enhance the overall passenger experience and make navigating the transit system easier and more predictable.
Schneider Electric Selected for Ontario Line South
Ontario Transit Group has selected Schneider Electric Canada to provide electrical and automation technologies for the Ontario Line South project, one of the largest transit infrastructure projects currently underway in Canada.
The company will supply switchgear, energy management systems, and tunnel ventilation controls designed to improve system reliability, safety, and operational efficiency. Once completed, the 15.6-kilometre Ontario Line is expected to serve nearly 388,000 riders daily, helping to address growing transportation demand across the Greater Toronto Area.
The project represents another significant step toward building a more connected, resilient, and efficient transit network for the region.
STM Receives First Nova Bus LFSe+ Electric Bus
The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) has received its first Nova Bus LFSe+ battery-electric bus as part of a larger order of 147 vehicles.
The new bus offers an operating range of approximately 300 kilometres and includes enhanced accessibility features, upgraded passenger amenities, and a redesigned operator workspace. The delivery marks an important milestone in STM’s fleet electrification strategy and broader sustainability goals.
Once all vehicles in the order have entered service, electric buses will account for approximately 10 per cent of STM’s fleet, supporting the agency’s efforts to reduce emissions while delivering a modern and accessible transit experience.
