Translink Wins Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Award

Translink received the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Award at the 2024 CUTA Awards Ceremony.

After receiving Board approval, the project began with designing and procuring 8,400 signs featuring braille and high-contrast tactile lettering. TransLink focused on creating a consistent format for unique bus stop information while selecting a durable metal sign with a painted finish for outdoor installation.

Sign installation commenced in December 2021, involving multiple TransLink teams and contractors. Customized information for each bus stop was prepared by Transit Service Design, with Engineering Project Delivery overseeing manufacturing, and CMBC Infrastructure Maintenance handling the installation.

Throughout the process, feedback from customers with vision loss was incorporated, leading to adjustments in installation height and letter spacing for improved legibility.

The project enjoyed strong support from the TransLink Board and stakeholders, standardizing the installation height and location of dual- format signs for a consistent experience across the network. This required coordination with municipal partners to accommodate existing bus stop amenities.

However, the project faced challenges, including a lack of precedents for implementing signage across over 8,400 stops and delays caused by a global paint shortage that extended the timeline by 11 months, with completion now set for November 2023.

The final phase involves transitioning from initial implementation to ongoing maintenance, including developing new processes for providing braille

and tactile information during detours and creating a budget for sign maintenance, replacement, and documentation of design specifications for future signs.
